Donvale is home to more than 11,000 people, and takes its name from the amalgamation of Doncaster and Springvale.
Until the middle of the 20th century the district was predominantly a fruit-growing area. Suburbanisation followed increased motor car ownership and the availability of land after orchard subdivision from the 1950s. Donvale was developed during the 1960s and 1970s, and its housing stock primarily consists of separate houses, with larger subdivisions in the east of the suburb. There is a high degree of affluence with over 40% of households recording income in the upper quartile.
