Templestowe Village
A former orchard and market garden area, Templestowe is now home to more than 16,000 people. Just 17km from Melbourne's CBD, Templestowe was scarcely populated until the expansionism of the 1970s.
It was then part of the so-called "green belt" of Melbourne and subdivision into less than 20,000 square metres was not possible in many parts of the suburb. As Melbourne spread past Kew and Balwyn, land prices escalated and pressure mounted to change the boundaries of the restricted land subdivision. There are still examples of the early houses made from brick and weatherboards.
